Start with the room, not the booth
New London fits an unusual amount of venue variety into a small coastal city. Within a few walkable blocks downtown you'll find a historic ballroom, a restored theater, a private social club and a maritime museum — and a short drive away, one of the larger waterfront banquet complexes in the region. Which of those rooms you're standing in shapes the booth decision more than the type of event does.
A 360 platform that anchors a wide shoreline ballroom will swallow a tight historic room on Bank Street, and an oceanfront pavilion raises power and wind questions a hotel never will. This guide walks through the venue types you're actually choosing between and what tends to fit each.
If your date is already set and you just want a booth in place, photo booth rental in New London County is the faster path — or go straight to the New London photo booth rental page for the city itself. This guide is for the planning stage, before the room is decided.
Downtown historic rooms and theaters
Downtown is where the city's character venues sit, most of them within a few blocks of each other. The Crocker House Ballroom sits on Union Street just off State, with a grand room and an attached open-air courtyard. The Garde Arts Center rents its lobby, gallery spaces and the Oasis Room for galas and receptions. The Thames Club offers traditional club rooms, the Custom House Maritime Museum handles intimate gatherings on the waterfront, and Tony D's keeps a dedicated banquet room with its own bar and dance floor for family parties.
These rooms photograph beautifully and they're the least forgiving on logistics. Period buildings tend to mean narrow doorways, stairs instead of elevators, fixed furniture and outlets in inconvenient places — and at the theater and museum spaces the main hall is usually off the table entirely, so plan around the lobby or function room. A compact open-air photo booth or a roaming photo booth that moves through the reception generally fits better than a fixed platform.
• Best fits: compact open-air, roaming, audio guestbook
• Watch for: stair-versus-elevator load-in, metered street parking along State and Bank Street, and equipment-placement rules in historic and gallery spaces
Ocean Beach Park and the waterfront rooms
A lot of the city's event volume runs through Ocean Beach Park, where the Port 'N' Starboard banquet and conference center holds several rooms on Long Island Sound — a main ballroom with a stage and dance floor, smaller ocean-view rooms that suit showers and Sweet 16s, and an open-sided pavilion. Weddings, proms, fundraisers and corporate celebrations all land here. Down the river, the Thames Yacht Club runs a member-driven summer calendar from its clubhouse and beach.
Indoors, these are the easiest rooms in the city to plan for: real floor space and house power mean a full open-air setup with prints, a 360 photo booth or a glam booth all work comfortably. The pavilion and beachfront spots are the ones to think through — open sides mean wind on backdrops and prints, salt air on gear, and a power drop that shouldn't be sharing a circuit with the bar.
• Best fits: open-air, 360, glam
• Watch for: a dedicated outdoor power run, wind exposure and level footing near the sand, and getting onto the in-house caterer's vendor list early
Museums, campus rooms and hotel ballrooms
Away from the water, New London's steadier bookings come from its museums, its colleges and its hotels. The Lyman Allyn Art Museum rents interior rooms year-round and opens its lawns and sculpture grounds in the warmer months. The Red Barn at Mitchell College — a rebuilt dairy barn — has level floors, wide doors and real climate control, which makes it one of the more cooperative rooms in the city for a full setup. And the Holiday Inn New London sits downtown beside the Garde with divisible meeting rooms and house AV, the default for conferences, award dinners and the parties that fill the calendar during Coast Guard Academy commencement week.
The hotel and the barn take almost any setup. Museum spaces are the constrained ones — artwork clearance, no wall mounting and controlled lighting are standard, and a coordinator will usually want your footprint and cable route in advance. For the sub-base and Pfizer-side award nights and holiday parties that fill these rooms in winter, a branded corporate photo booth with a logo overlay works as both keepsake and share.
• Best fits: open-air, branded corporate, glam
• Watch for: museum placement rules and longer lead times, house AV and banquet-captain-controlled outlets at the hotel, and preferred-caterer lists at campus venues
Nearby: Groton, Waterford and East Lyme
Plenty of New London-area events actually happen just over the line. Groton has some of the larger hotel ballroom space in the region — the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa is where bigger weddings and corporate galas tend to go when downtown can't hold them, and a full-service hotel ballroom usually makes for a straightforward technical install. Waterford is the estate-and-outdoor side: Eolia at Harkness Memorial State Park, the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's lawns and tented garden, and Great Neck Country Club's covered patio overlooking the course. East Lyme rounds out the shoreline.
Same packages, same booth styles, with travel and availability confirmed before booking. The Waterford properties are the ones that reward early planning — tented and lawn setups mean leveling feet, weighted stands, long power runs and a rain plan, and state-park and estate venues tend to run tight setup-and-breakdown windows.
• Best fits: 360, glam, open-air
• Watch for: tent power versus house outlets, vehicle-access rules on park and estate grounds, and vendor insurance requirements at the larger hotels
Five things to confirm with your venue
Whatever room you land on, five questions settle most of the uncertainty:
• Footprint: how much floor space is reserved for the booth, and is there overhead clearance for a 360 arm in an older room?
• Power: is there a standard outlet within reach on a circuit that isn't already carrying the DJ, the bar or catering equipment?
• Load-in: stairs or elevator, doorway widths, and where a vehicle can unload on a metered downtown block?
• Timing: when can setup start, and when must teardown finish — historic and state-park venues often allow less time than you'd expect?
• Outdoor: for pavilion, patio or tented setups, is there shade, level ground, a wind-safe anchor and a rain plan?
Our space and power requirements guide covers the full rundown. Every rental includes an on-site attendant who handles setup and runs the booth all night, so once these details are confirmed the logistics are ours to manage.
